Marie Sester is a media artist based in New York. Born in France, she began her career as a architect, with a master’s degree from the Ecole d’Architecture in Strasbourg in 1980. Her interest shifted from how to build viable structures to the manner in which place, cultural values and political ideas are intertwined and affect our understanding of the world, particularly questioning the societal perspective of the West.

In 1990, after spending several periods in North and Central Africa, Marie relocated to Paris where she worked in 2D media. After a residency in Japan in 1993, her worked shifted toward public space installation and increasingly toward 3D and interactive. In 2000 she moved to the U.S. to pursue her interest in how digital technologies affect access, visibility, and transparency.

Marie’s digital installations and websites have earned an Honorary Mention in Interactive Art from Ars Electronica (2003), a Webby Award for Net Art (2004), and a spot on the "50 Coolest Websites" list on Time Magazine Online (2004). Her installations have most recently shown in both the Seoul and Singapore Bienniales (2008) and Glow Eindhoven (2009), with an upcoming installation at SFMOMA (fall 2010). She is a 2002 Creative Capital Grantee.
